Mental Health Benefits of Haircuts

We can recall weekend afternoons when we would sit in our barbershops, listening to many stories that other clients are sharing, laughing at, debating, and experiencing. Having our hair cut is not just a haircut, but a social get together. We recall going to barbershops to watch basketball games and not even getting a haircut, and we have our own experiences with barbershops, beauty parlors, and salons.  Healthtrends report that many people love pampering and grooming and wonder why barbershops and salons give us a sense of freedom and calmness. Initial questions are answered in a study done on the relationship between haircuts and mental health.

Socialization and Haircuts

Two researchers conducted a study that included 202 participants, of which 58 were men and 144 were women. The survey included questions like people talking to their hairdresser/barber about their issues, problems, and even people going to the hairdresser/barbershop to pass the time. All of the questions were answered with a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The researchers found out that black men talked and socialized more significantly than any other group, and black men are likely to go to their hairstylists for different reasons than just getting a haircut, unlike white men. On the other hand, women talked and socialized as much as each other regardless of race.

Elements and Results

Visiting the barbers or hairdressers indicates the different elements contributing to the improvement of the wellbeing of a person, such as; reading magazines, talking, watching TV, etc. There is a factor of trust involved in building strong relationships with our barber or stylist. We can recall a period where clients do not allow anybody else to cut their hair other than their favorite barbers. Maybe this is not about the ability of the barber to cut hair, but also a comfortability to talk and connection to share your personal issues.

Feelings and Haircuts

haircutAfter finishing your haircut or getting a new hairdo, a feeling of freshness is always associated with this. We leave the barbershop or hairdresser feeling clean and beautiful, which contributes to the perception of a person to ourselves. The socialization time to discuss personal issues with our barber or hairdresser can help us in getting unbiased opinions and can have another direction and perspective from another person’s point of view. The only problem with asking questions is if barbers and hairdressers are qualified to provide opinions on their customers regarding personal matters. Still, the answer is it entirely depends on each person.

We cannot deny the fact that our trips to our hair cutters are a social gathering for some and can be a grooming session to provide feelings of relaxation and freshness, but nobody can say that.
